Description

Join Flatwater Free Press reporter Sara Gentzler and journalist/professor Carol Zuegner to learn some of the basics of the Freedom of Information Act. A brief primer on the history, how it works at the federal, state and local level and some examples from Sara on opportunities and challenges. We’ll cover the basics of using FOIA and offer resources on a template for request and where to find out more. About the presenters: Sara Gentzler is a reporter for Flatwater Free Press. Previously, Sara was an enterprise reporter at the Omaha World-Herald, where she covered the ultra-dramatic 2022 gubernatorial primary race. Before that, as a state government reporter, she broke stories on Nebraska footing the bill (and refusing to admit it) for deploying state troopers to the southern border and its practice of inking millions in no-bid pandemic contracts with an out-of-state company. She graduated from Gretna High School and Creighton University and ultimately returned to Nebraska from Washington state, where she covered state government for The Olympian and three other newspapers. Carol Zuegner, Ph.D., is a journalist and associate professor of journalism at Creighton University. She also holds the Joella Cohen Endowed Chair in Journalism. She has worked as a reporter and editor for The Associated Press and the Omaha World-Herald.
