Description

The magic lantern was a very popular entertainment in the 19th Century, before movies. Professional lanterns were found in lecture halls and theaters, while German toy makers created children's lanterns for use in the home. Using a toy lantern, Dawn Elliott and Joel Schlemowitz will present a children's program, followed by hands-on activities including hand-coloring reproduction lantern slides, and exploring other early optical devices. Additional Victorian games and toys will also be available for kids to enjoy, and kids can bring home their own magic lantern slide creation. This is a "drop-in" event - please select your entry time slot at check-out. Recommended for children ages 7-12 Please call Staatsburgh State Historic Site at (845) 889-8851 or email [email protected] with ticketing questions. This program is presented by the Friends of Mills at Staatsburgh, with the generous assistance of The Pomeroy Fund for History.
