The West Virginia Upward Bound Math-Science Academy 2023 (WVUBMS) will be held at West Liberty University in West Liberty, WV, starting Sunday, June 4 through Friday, June 9. Up to 120 high school students from John Marshall and Weir High Schools will participate in this college-going summer academy experience. West Virginia UBMS will hire camp counselors to serve at the summer academy. As a camp counselor, you will be responsible for the following actions: Staff Support – Counselors will assist with the implementation of the camp schedule and supervise their group of campers (approximately 15 students) to ensure that students adhere to the WVUBMS Code of Conduct and attend academy events, activities, and instruction sessions. Academic & Personal Support – Counselors must encourage students to actively participate in the academy's events as a way to help prepare for postsecondary education. Counselors will engage their group in mentoring sessions to discuss their program experience. Counselors will be provided with talking points and a handbook to help guide these sessions. Goal Development and Encouragement – Counselors support students in goal-setting during their the summer academy as well as how these goals translate to their academic pursuits - both in high school and postsecondary environments - in addition to their career aspirations. Friendship and Guidance – Counselors must listen and show an interest in students— especially those who might not otherwise receive much attention or support. Accountability and Positive Examples – Counselors must serve as a reliable resource for students and be honest, trustworthy and dependable. Counselors should also encourage students to adhere to positive values, which you should exemplify yourself in the process.  Record-Keeping: Counselors will be required to complete appropriate reports as needed through WVUBMS in regard to their time and effort. Additional documentation may be required given student interactions, mentoring, and similar activities.
