STEAMaster: Remixing Science Education was founded by Curtis O'Dwyer in 2018. Since then, over 1,500 students across St. Louis have participated. STEAMaster is a program that engages learners in equitable science education by integrating a hip-hop praxis, pedagogy, and critical lens into the classroom to teach to, and through, students’ culture. This program uses science content and concepts students are currently learning and offers a creative way to demonstrate their understanding by writing a science rap or poem.
Students get graded on their understanding of the science content, but there is also a culminating competition to celebrate students' brilliance and to determine who is the STEAMaster of their local school. On Friday, April 21st from 5:00 - 8:00 pm in the gym Cross Keys, students will be competing in the CKMS STEAMaster Competition 2023. This event brings together finalists from 8th Grade Team Clutch to demonstrate their brilliance as science students by communicating their understanding in rap or poems.
