In The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan explores co-evolution — how humans and plants change each other to further their own interests. Pollan discusses basic human desires and how we fulfill them through propagation, selective breeding, and genetic engineering by concentrating on four plants: the apple reflects the desire for sweetness, the tulip for beauty, cannabis for intoxication, and the potato for control.
The Botanic Book Club will meet on Thursday, May 18 at the Memphis Botanic Garden at 7 PM. Join us for a conversation about the book’s ideas — newcomers are always welcome! Come early to grab a cocktail and visit the gardens. There’s no charge for the book club, but visiting the gardens requires a paid admission or MBG membership.
The Botany of Desire is available in softcover and digital/audio formats.
