Tall Mass Timber Buildings & Fire Service ConcernsThis session introduces firefighters and fire inspectors to tall mass timber (TMT) buildings (that can be constructed up to 18 stories in some cases), the history of cross-laminated timber (CLT), how it is made, and its properties. The Course outlines the new code requirements in the International Building Code (IBC) and discusses the extensive fire testing that was conducted. The program addresses specific fire service concerns. Codes that Safeguard ConstructionThis session introduces inspectors to the codes that safeguard buildings undergoing construction, major renovation, and demolition. The course discusses best practices regarding hot work, housekeeping, storage, and site security. Students will learn the requirements and responsibilities of the construction site fire prevention program manager and the components of a well-crafted construction site pre-fire plan. They will preview the construction fire safety code changes coming in the 2021 edition of the International Fire Code. Batteries and the Fire ServiceThis session will not only tackle the changes happening to our operational staff the program will dive into the operational response and code requirements for batteries in buildings and energy storage systems. The program will provide details on resources available from the International Association of Fire Chiefs Lithium Ion Battery Committee. This session intends to bring all aspects of our fire service together for a unified response, from codes to battery operations. Instructors: Raymond O’Brocki, CBO Raymond O’Brocki, CBO, is the Manager of Fire Service Relations for the American Wood Council. Before that, he was the Chief Building Official for the City of Rockville, MD. He retired as the Assistant Fire Chief of the Baltimore City Fire Department in 2013. He was appointed fire marshal for Baltimore City in 2008. He has served on numerous NFPA committees and presented at the National Fire Academy and various venues nationwide. He is currently a sitting member of the International Fire Code Committee. O’Brocki is a University of Baltimore School of Law graduate and a licensed attorney. Michael O’BrianMichael O'Brian has been the Fire Chief for the Brighton Area Fire Authority (Brighton, MI) for the last 11 years. He serves on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Fire Chiefs, representing the Fire and Life Safety Section as their international director. Chief O'Brian is the past recipient of the Robert W. Gain Fire Prevention Leadership Award and the ICC/IAFC 2021 Excellence in Fire & Life Safety Award. Chief O'Brian is active in the code development process with both the International Code Council and National Fire Protection Association.
