For several years, the Village of Promise has hosted its Speaker Series, highlighting thought leaders to speak to the Huntsville community about best practice solutions for addressing generational poverty. From its initial speaker, Geoffrey Canada, of the Harlem Children's Zone, to most recently, Manny Scott, PhD., listeners have been informed and challenged to re-think what is possible as the Village of Promise delivers on its mission of " ...empower[ing] families to advance out of poverty... toachieve their goals and contribute to their community." After 24 years with NASA as a researcher, astronaut and Senior Executive Service leader, Leland Melvin shares his life story to help inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue STEAM careers. Leland shares his personal journey from the gridiron to the stars, and examines the intersecting roles of community, perseverance, and grace that align to create opportunities for success.
