All high school age students attending school or living in the East Bay are welcome to register for a free poetry workshop led by Rhode Island Poet Laureate Tina Cane at Imago Gallery from 10:30 – 4 p.m. Saturday, April 8.
The event will include introductory readings by this year’s RI Youth Poetry Ambassador Natasha Connolly, Deputy Ambassador Sadie Jackson and the three students who received honorable mentions in the 2023 Youth Poetry Ambassador competition sponsored by the Rhode Island Center for the Book: Favour Akinnagbe, Marvellous Awe and Karuna Lohmann.
The later portion of the day includes a working lunch and will focus on ways to imagine and generate new poems, ideas for future poems and revision tips. It will also give students the opportunity to meet a network of peer poets and to practice reading poems to an audience.
Imago will work with Mount Hope Regional High School in Bristol, Barrington High School, St. Andrew’s High School in Barrington, and Highlander Charter School in Warren to get students registered. East Bay high school age students attending other schools are welcome to register here on Eventbrite or may call 401-528-7210 or email [email protected] to get registered.
This program is being supported in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional sponsorship by BankNewport and the White Family Foundation.
