Advanced Leash Development- 4 Hour work shop
Whether you are a new handler or seasoned veteran, you probably have some of the basics of leash handling. Advanced Leash Development is a high speed, hands-on workshop to provide you with the skills needed to work as an effective K9 team. After a short lecture, teams will conduct drills on leash handling and techniques. Topics include- Basic skills refresher, selecting the equipment for your team, how to avoid getting tangled up and how to fix it quickly if you do, getting the dog where you need them to sniff, techniques for both collar and harness use, getting out of the way while maintaining control, and what to do in case of an emergency. There will other helpful tips and problem solving throughout the workshop as well.
Instructor Bio- Pete Stevens is a 32 year law enforcement veteran. He has personally handled and certified 4 Police Service Dogs. While apprehension work is a vital portion of patrol work, Pete's passion is detection work. Working close to the border allowed Pete to really be challenged from locating the smallest personal use amounts to literally tons of narcotics. Pete has been handling and training dogs since August 2000. He is a evaluator for the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST) and a Certifying Official and on the Board of Directors for the California Narcotic Canine Association (CNCA). Pete is also a trial judge for NACSW and USCSS.
Requirements- Dogs must recognize and actively hunt for the target odors they are trained for. This is NOT an imprinting workshop. If your team is trained on an odor other than Anise, Birch, and Clove- please bring your target odor(s) (narcotics, explosives, etc)
