Description

Heaven knows there are plenty of confusing terms and concepts in the wine world. Our April Third Thursday tasting, April 20, will help demystify the general difference between Old World and New World wines. Oversimplified, Old World is Europe and New World is the Americas plus Australia and New Zealand. Any definition begins with the simple truth that New World countries learned its craft from Old World traditions. Many old world vines have been planted or grafted onto root stock in America so we can enjoy the fine Chardonnays of Burgundy or Cabernet of Bordeaux. Another oversimplification is Old World wines feature more emphasis on terroir with minerality and more subdued fruit but lots of acidity. The New World wines are often more fruit forward and easily accessible to wine novices. And to mess all that up Italy (old world) makes quite a few wines which are very fruit forward. It becomes a bit of a head scratcher when you realize China would be considered a new world area. Then you have new world countries like Argentina and Chile which have made old world grapes like Malbec, Carmenere and Tannat their own. By definition you can see we are going to have many different wines for tasting the 20th. Bring some friends and join us for our monthly tasting event. It’s always a fun evening. Remember you taste free and the wines are all 20% off.
