Description
Acts: New World, New People If Luke is the story of what Jesus began to do and teach, Acts is the story of what Jesus continued to do and teach, in and through his followers. Jesus’s rule, his 'kingdom,' was not postponed until his eventual return. It was truly inaugurated, in and for the present world, with the events of his death, resurrection, and ascension, and the sending of the Spirit. The second coming will complete the work, but it has now decisively begun. It is, of course, a different kind of 'kingdom' from what the wider world might expect. Jesus's followers are commissioned to announce his lordship, thereby launching communities of believers that cut across typical social and cultural boundaries, challenging the world with a new vision of how to be human. Join Prof. Wright to read Acts through the lens of its ancient context to discover how, through Jesus and the Spirit, heaven and earth are joined in a new way, confronting the philosophies of the time, and reaching out towards the new creation itself. This study will introduce all kinds of implications for our own present work for the Kingdom of God. What might it look like when the gospel of Jesus arrives in new places? The answer is every bit as challenging in our world as it was when Acts was written.
