Description

John Brown is the Vice Provost for the Arts at Duke University, where he has been an educator and Head of the Jazz Studies Department. John Brown has taught at Duke University since the Spring of 2001. He started as the Double Bass Instructor in January of 2001, and applied for the position as Director of the Jazz Program upon the retirement of Paul Jeffrey in 2003. After completing a year as Visiting Director from 2003-2004, John began as the permanent Director of the Jazz Program in the Fall of 2004, and now also serves as an Associate Professor of the Practice of Music and a faculty resident. At Duke, he teaches lecture courses, directs the jazz ensemble, oversees the Duke Jazz Festival, the jazz combo course and engages students in a wide variety of performance opportunities. John Brown's band will perform an evening of jazz standards, with a focus on North Carolina natives like Nina Simone and John Coltrane.
