Description

This history walking tour will begin east of the intersection of Flagler Street and Biscayne Boulevard in Bayfront Park in downtown Miami. The tour will proceed west on Flagler Street and will highlight the history of Miami’s main street. Attendees will hear about when Flagler Street was a residential quarter featuring some impressive Victorian style residences. They will learn about the history of the eastern most avenue adjacent to Flagler Street, which was originally named Avenue A, changed to NE Third Avenue in 1921, but nicknamed Short Street given its two-block span. The tour will continue west where the attendee will see the original location of the Woman’s Club, which also was the city’s first public library, but was later replaced by the Art Deco styled Walgreen’s building in the 1930s. Hear about the architectural style and history of the Olympia Theater and the Alfred I Dupont Building, which are both located along East Second Avenue. Learn about the center of the modern address scheme, labeled the Chaille Plan, which centers around Flagler Street and Miami Avenue. Hear the history of the buildings that once and currently sit adjacent to the city’s most important intersection. The tour will continue west and will conclude at the Dade County Courthouse. Hear the nearly 125-year history of the courthouses that sat on the current site and see where the new county courthouse is being constructed. This tour will sell out quickly, so please purchase your ticket early. Meet prior to 9:00am on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at the Dade County War Memorial in Bayfront Park which is located on the right of the main pathway near the water fountain at the eastern edge of the park.
