Description

Palm Harbor Museum honors Jewish American Heritage Month, May 2023, as Ed Marks, President of Palm Harbor's Temple Ahavat Shalom, revisits a profile in courage of local resident and benefactor Frank Weaner—businessman and co-founder of the Greater Palm Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce and member of the then newly-founded Temple Ahavat Shalom in the late 70s. The program, which includes a screened display of historic photographs, will be presented at the Palm Harbor Library on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, beginning at 6:30 PM. Following David Duke's announced intentions to relocate KKK state headquarters to Palm Harbor in 1978—and the Klan's then use of local property for public rallies that included cross burnings—the Palm Harbor community (spearheaded by Weaner—who had been threatened by the KKK with retaliation) unified, renounced bigotry, and confronted Duke to oppose his presence. Land being used by the KKK was sold by its proprietor to Charles Rutenberg, a leader and philanthropist of Tampa Bay's Jewish community. This little-known story of courage is a tribute to one man's open-hearted influence on the Tampa Bay Area and the state of Florida. All are welcome to this event at no charge. Walk-ins are welcome and RSVPs are not required — but do help us plan. We would be grateful if you reserve your spot from this page. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PALM HARBOR MUSEUM PRESENTS: A PALM HARBOR PROFILE IN COURAGE: FRANK WEANER AND THE COMMUNITY STAND UP TO THE KLAN with Ed Marks Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 6:30 PM Palm Harbor Library, 2330 Nebraska Ave, Palm Harbor, FL 34683, in the Community Room (first room to your right as you enter the library).
