Iredell County's COVID-19 Death Toll Increases to 133

MOORESVILLE, NC — Iredell County added 1,140 new known coronavirus cases last week as 23 county residents lost their lives to the virus in the span of a week, according to county health data. As of Monday, Jan. 11, the spread of COVID-19 increased to 11,132 cases, Iredell County Health Department said. At least 133 county residents have died from COVID-19 since March, up from 110 deaths reported Jan. 4. Coronavirus hospitalizations increased to 77 patients Monday, up from 69 reported Jan. 4.Iredell County is one of 84 counties in the state where coronavirus spread is considered to be at a critical level, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Nearly 300 students and 80 school district staff were in quarantine for COVID-19 during the first four days back in school following the winter break, according to Iredell-Statesville Schools. Between Jan. 4 and Jan. 7, three students and six school district staff members tested positive for COVID-19, the school district said. Among staff members, 74 are in quarantine from possible coronavirus exposure from a community contact while six are in quarantine from a possible school contact. At least 46 staff members are isolating with symptoms, ISS said. North Carolina reported 5,936 new COVID-19 cases Monday as the state's death toll rose by 11, DHHS said. As of Jan. 11, the state's tally of coronavirus cases increased to 629,124 known cases, and nearly 14 percent of tests were positive. At least 7,578 deaths in the state are attributed to COVID-19. COVID-19 hospitalizations also rose throughout the state Monday. At least 3,843 patients were hospitalized for coronavirus-related illness, 69 more than reported Sunday. A survey of 94 percent of North Carolina hospitals indicated the state had 388 staffed intensive care unit beds and 5,200 staffed inpatient hospital beds remaining available.
