Description
This presentation will include a basic overview of special education eligibility in the school setting. Participants will learn what to expect in a special education eligibility meeting and gain a basic understanding of educational supports available through the public schools. An overview of Individualized Education Plans and 504 plans will be presented, as well as a review of available support for students outside of special education. Participants will leave feeling comfortable to attend special education eligibility meetings and have a better understanding to advocate for their children. This free event is sponsored by Maine Township's MaineStay Youth & Family Services and Chicago Behavioral Hospital. It is appropriate for parents, educators, students, community members, and professionals and includes 2.0 free CEUs for social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, and nurses. Check in will be from 5:30-6:00 pm. Advance registration is requested as seating for this event is limited. Presenter BioAbigail Pruitt is a doctoral student of school psychology at Northern Illinois University. Currently, she serves as the school psychology extern at a local elementary school, where she works to ensure that children feel safe, are supported, and have what they need to be successful in the classroom. Abigail’s primary experience in school includes conducting special education evaluations at early childhood and elementary levels. Abigail’s primary research interests include behavior assessment and rater bias. She graduated with her Master of Arts in Psychology, and is expected to graduate with her Ph.D. in school psychology in May 2024.
