Description

Navigating the world of addiction diagnosis, treatment and recovery is hard. It can be challenging for the person who has the addiction, their family and everyone around them who tries to help. It’s even more difficult when the person with the addiction is also living with an intellectual and/or developmental disability.  Monarch, a leading provider of services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and substance use disorders (SUD) in North Carolina, has developed a specialized curriculum called “Understanding Addiction and Developmental Disabilities” for people living with I/DD who also have an SUD. Created by Monarch's mental health and intellectual and developmental disabilities professionals, in consultation with medical, psychological and disabilities providers as well as people with lived experience and their families, this curriculum is focused on key concepts of addiction and will provide tools to support recovery. It is informed by evidence-based practices and the material is presented in a series of easy-to-understand animated videos. The videos and accompanying materials available are designed for specifically for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities (also called neurocognitive disorders). These resources are created to be understood by someone with an IQ between 50 and 70, but they are helpful to anyone needing to know more about addiction and recovery. About the Training: Monarch will host free training for professionals who provide support to people living with I/DD to introduce the curriculum and how it may be used in a variety of therapeutic and support settings to care for someone living with I/DD and and SUD. The training will be led by Monarch's President and CEO Dr. Peggy Terhune, Ph.D., MBA, OTR/L, and Vice President of Operations, Outpatient Clinical Services Todd Posey M.Ed, LCMHCS, LCAS, CCS. Additional confirming details will be sent to you prior to the training. CEU Credit for trainings will be announced soon!  For more information this training or the curriculum, please visit MonarchNC.org/understanding or email [email protected]
