In this comprehensive workshop Kelcie and Erica of Crooked Trail Farm will help you learn the skills necessary to safely and efficiently process your chickens from start to finish by yourself at home.
The topics covered will include:
Preparing ahead for an efficient slaughter day
Knife sharpening
Humane killing
Scalding
Plucking by mechanical methods as well as by hand
Gutting
Cleaning
Parting out a bird
Shrink packaging
Sanitary cleanup
We recommend bringing your own sharp knife but we will have a few available for workshop use. We prefer a 6” boning knife like this, https://rb.gy/a6i6gc, or a vent knife like this, tinyurl.com/5n7r8svm. Drinks, snacks, and lunch will be provided and each participant will go home with two chickens that they have processed and packaged themselves. Bring a cooler or insulated bag for transporting your chickens.
Please contact us for options if you want to attend but the cost is prohibitive.
The workshop will be held outdoors, rain or shine, under canopies. Please dress accordingly.
