We are excited to announce our first Teen Public Safety Academy, a joint effort between the North Aurora Fire Protection District and North Aurora Police Department. The Academy will be held 8:00 a.m. to 1:30pm from Monday, June 5th through Friday, June 9th at the police and fire stations. The goals of the program are to build engagement with the youth in our community, introduce them to potential career opportunities, and provide an overview of police and fire department operations. Participants will receive a fun, hands-on experience as well as an Academy t-shirt. Some of the police topics to be covered (subject to change) are: Hiring procedures / applicant screening / dangers of social mediaPatrol duties / vehicles / equipment / tour of stationInvestigations & evidence collectionBuilding searchesUse of forceTraffic stopsPolice canine & SWAT demonstrationsSome of the fire topics to be covered are: Personal protective equipment / self-contained breathing apparatusEngine / truck equipment / extinguishers / hoses & hydrantsBurn cell / fire investigationsTechnical rescueExtricationEMS / helicopter landingLunch will be provided each day and offer students the opportunity to get to know fellow students and public safety personnel. Parents are invited to attend lunch & graduation on Friday, June 9th, noon to 1:30 p.m. A full schedule with drop-off locations will be sent to students and parents prior to the start of the class. The Teen Public Safety Academy is FREE and open to North Aurora residents who are incoming high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors (15-18 years of age) for the 2023-2024 school year. Maximum of 20 seats available. If space is available, incoming freshmen and/or non-residents may be invited to attend. Register on Eventbrite by Monday, May 8th, 2023 and staff will email parents an informational & waiver packet which must be completed and returned by Wednesday, May 31st, 2023.
