FARLEY PARK BOARD NAMES PAUL SCHERRMAN FIELD The Farley Park Board announced the naming of Paul Scherrman Field with a ceremony and semi-pro baseball game to be played on June 10, 2023. The baseball field will be named to honor Paul’s lifetime and ongoing dedication to baseball and the Farley community. Scherrman has been involved with baseball his entire life and has spent countless summers perfecting the field and turf management process – including enhancements to the protective netting, foul lines, fence, dugouts, lighting, stands, and more to make the field one of the best in the area. The facility is now the home field for not only the Farley Hawks and local teams, but the Western Dubuque Bobcats “Baseball has been a huge part of my life and this is an unbelievable honor being bestowed upon me,” said Paul Scherrman. “I can’t think of anybody more deserving of this honor then Paul Scherrman. I have had the pleasure of working with Paul for many years as a member of the Park Board and Paul has worked tirelessly to make our Park one of the best in the state and he did it without any accolades or monetary benefits. He did it for the love of the sport, the City Park and the town of Farley. For that we are forever grateful!” stated Amy Kluesner, President of the Farley Park Board. “Many times, an honor such as this happens too often after the fact. For Paul’s wife Jody, and children, John, Mike, Rob, Molly and particularly for Paul this recognition will hopefully be enjoyed for many years to come,” said former Farley Hawk, Dale Till. Till continued, “As the manager for Farley semi pro baseball for over 50 years, Paul has and continues to be a class act regarding all aspects of area baseball.” A devoted baseball player and enthusiast, Paul has shown leadership both on and off the field. After graduating from Saint Mary’s University with a BS in Psychology, Paul signed a professional baseball contract with the Washington Senators in 1971 where he played in the Carolina and Western Carolina Leagues as catcher. Following his time with the Senators, Paul returned to Farley to work at the family business and raise a family. Paul continued to manage and play with the Farley Hawks semi-pro baseball team which he continues to manage today. Also, during this time, Paul managed and played with his three sons and managed his grandsons. His passion for baseball took him to the screen when he was cast as a ghost player in the movie Field of Dreams. Following the film’s success, Paul joined the “Ghost Players” traveling around the globe to provide skill and leadership training to coaches and children of all ages. Paul is the Charter President of the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Semi-Pro Baseball League and is a Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Famer. Paul was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives and served three terms from 1997 to 2002 before retiring. Paul is honored to serve as a member of the Boards of the Clemente Foundation and for Roberto’s Kids also serving as the mid-west regional program coordinator.
