Description
This event is for intermediate scent-makers or those who have already attended Open Sessions/Blending Sessions at The Institute for Art and Olfaction. In 2022, Edward Bear, known to his friends as Winnie-the-Pooh, or Pooh for short, a Bear of Very Little Brain, and his friends entered the public domain. Open Source Smell Culture and the Perfume Design Challenge are here to welcome these fuzzy friends to the public domain with a creative scent-blending exploration. ABOUT THE SESSION The Institute for Art and Olfaction’s Perfume Design Challenge is a hands-on timed challenge, intended to jumpstart a creative process and teach students quick design problem-solving with a limited olfactory palette. The program is intended to allow participants to learn how to respond to design briefs of all varieties, while experimenting with aromatic materials and creative briefs. After blending, participants will present their fragrance and thought process in composing their scent to the group. Completed scents, formulas, and design inspiration will be on display following each session. We believe there is no one right or wrong way to work with scent. As such, we try to present a variety of philosophies and methodologies, and keep an open mind about the many clever ways people can wield a pipette. WHAT TO EXPECT Orientation Session Upon arrival, there will be a short orientation session for the topic of the Perfume Design Challenge, as well as an introduction to scent blending and the aromatic material palette we’ll be working from. Blending Session After the orientation session, you’ll have an hour and a half to create a scent inspired by the topic. At your work station, you’ll have lab ware, a formula sheet, and a deadline to express your creativity. You’ll be pushed to problem-solve and ideate, and you’ll learn through hands-on experimentation with perfumery materials. Sharing Session Creativity is key. So is communication. After the deadline, we’ll share our perfume design with the other participants in attendance, explaining our creative process, our specific inspiration, and our interpretations of the challenge through the materials. Take-Aways: Participants will spend an hour and a half blending with selected materials, and leave with an appreciation for the complexities of aromatic materials and scent blending, as well as the formula work for their Perfume Design. ABOUT THE PERFUME DESIGN CHALLENGE Started in 2018, the Perfume Design Challenge is a timed creative scent-blending activity, intended to jumpstart olfactory brainstorming and teach students quick design problem-solving with a limited olfactory palette. The Perfume Design Challenge was inspired by the charrette. The charrette ("cart" in French) was developed by the École des Beaux-Arts, where architecture students were given a design problem to solve in a short amount of time. Their architectural drawings were collected on a rolling cart to be transported from the studio to the school for student presentations of their designs. The term charrette has developed to refer to short term intense creative brainstorming and design, in respond to a specific problem, that is then presented to others for feedback.
