Death Cafes are community events where individuals gather over sweets and tea to discuss topics of interest around Death and Dying. The original concept of Death Cafe was introduced by Jon Underwood in the UK in 2010 to promote normalization of discussions about death (deathcafe.com). Since the launching of the initial death cafes thousands of death cafes have been held worldwide. The Death Cafe is run by participants with topics determined by participants according to their interest. The discussions are self-directed by participants along with a facilitator helping to ensure guidance from the Death Cafe organization is followed. General guidelines include that all views are welcome, everyone is encouraged to participate, there are no commercial presentations, and there is no charge for attendance.
