WHITE PLAINS, NY — The number of new coronavirus infections continues to rise in Westchester County. At his Monday news briefing, Westchester County Executive George Latimer called the situation "not good," in spite of there being light at the end of the tunnel because vaccines are being made available. Working with numbers for Saturday, he said there were 10,894 active cases of the virus, which was almost the exact same number that the county experienced on April 10 two months into the pandemic. Numbers released by the state after Latimer's news conference revealed an even higher increase. As of Sunday, there were 11,265 active cases, according to the county's COVID-19 Dashboard. There have been 1,730 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to Sunday's information, an increase of nine from Saturday to Sunday, Latimer said. He said there have been 200 additional deaths since the county had its "Ribbons of Remembrance Ceremony" Dec. 3 — a little more than a month ago. Latimer said that the only relatively good news was that the number of hospitalizations, as of Saturday, was 504, which is much lower than the total number of hospital beds in Westchester. "We have not reached the crisis situation in California," he said, in which hospitals are being overwhelmed by the number of patients suffering from COVID-19-related illnesses.
