Description
This course is taught by Duly Authorized Instructor as defined in NYS Penal Law 265. Following the guidelines released by the Division of Criminal Justice Services and the New York State Police, we will be conducting 16 hours of classroom training culminating in a written examination. Students will then have 2 hours of live fire training on the range to work on hands-on skills and pass a shooting evaluation/ qualification course of fire. Classroom lecture topics will include: State and federal gun laws, general firearm safety, firearm cleaning and maintenance, safe handling practices, range safety rules, proper holster and retention strategies for safe concealed carry, conflict de-escalation, effects of alcohol and drug use as it pertains to firearm safety, best practices when encountering law enforcement, statutorily defined sensitive and restricted locations, conflict management, use of deadly physical force, suicide prevention, and basic principles of marksmanship. Students will be required to score 80% or above on a written examination covering the topics discussed in the classroom. Hands-on training on the range will cover range safety, safe drawing, target acquisition, and re-holstering, dry firing, safe loading and unloading of ammunition, performing a firearm condition check, and how to achieve and verify a safe and empty firearm, safely discharging the firearm. Students will be required to score 4 out of 5 rounds on a 25 1/2 in. by 11 in. paper target at 4 yards. Tentative Course Schedule: Day 1: 0830-1800: Lecture/ Classroom/Intro to Hands on Skills Day 2: 0830-1700: Lecture/ Classroom/ Written Exam Day2: 1830-2100: Hands on Skills/ Live Fire/ Shooting Exam Students must attend all sessions in order to complete this course! Requirements for class enrollment Students who do not possess a pistol license: New students must bring a valid photo ID, notebook, and black pen. Students must bring eye and ear protection and have on pants with a sturdy belt. All other necessary equipment will be provided. Students who DO possess a pistol license: Must possess a current pistol permit in the State of New York. Students will have to bring both their pistol license and photo ID. RANGE TIME/ FIREARMS/ AMMUNITION We have an arrangement with our host facility to provide range time, firearms, holsters, ammunition, and targets for each student. Students will learn on a state of the art indoor range facility with modern Sig Sauer M17 9MM Pistols. Course Fee Breakdown Total Course fee: $400 Non-Refundable Deposit is due at registration. Add-on for Utah and/or Florida fingerprinting, applications, and ID photos is $100 and due at time of registration. Course fee includes full color book, all paperwork, range fees, ammunition, targets, and firearm rental. Utah and/or Florida add on includes fingerprinting, ID photos, and all paperwork related to non-resident permits. This course is approved by Westchester County for Westchester Residents. Food/ Beverage: Students are encouraged to bring their own snacks, food, and beverage to class. There are also several local establishments nearby. Additionally, our classroom location has a Street Taco Truck that operates 11AM-3PM daily, with fresh, delicious food and beverage! Background Check Provision Our live fire range is the prestigious Tronsrue Marksmanship Center at the United States Military Academy Located in West Point, NY. It is a short (5 minute) transit from our classroom. Being a military base, all students may be background checked for the purposes of being able obtain a visitor pass to access our live fire location.
