We are fortunate that a member of the Yeamans Hall Club has a deep love for the trees and environment of this lowcountry treasure and is willing to share it with us for an afternoon.
We will have walk a few of the 8 trails that encircle the private club, first organized in New York in 1925. It became a winter resort for people living in the North, looking for a place that was not snowbound. They would arrive by train along the tracks you cross just before arriving at the property's gate house.
I first visited the club in the 1960's when my father had a summer golf membership. Even as a child I knew it was a special place and looked forward to being a caddy for my father. The live oaks that line the fairways now have an underground system that protects them from lightning strikes - common in the hot summer months.
At this time of the year we will likely see blooming wildflowers and plenty of land and shore birds. There is a bald eagle's nest on the property which we can locate and view.
So sign up, wear your hiking shoes, bring some water, maybe bug spray and a cap too. This is a great time to take a walk in the woods before summer and summer heat is here.
Space is limited to 10 people.
