Description

In the course of this three hour beginning carving class, Wooden Joe (aka Joe Udelhoffen) will teach you everything you need to know to carve a wonderful, whimsical wooden face out of cottonwood bark. We'll start with the basics of planning your face and roughing out its features. Then you'll use hand tools to add detail and finishing touches. Each participant will receive their own set of tools and two pieces of cottonwood bark provided by St. Olaf Natural Lands. This class is accessible for beginning carvers but everyone is welcome regardless of experience. Ages: Adults and teens. Cost: $60 for the class (Pay $10 now to reserve your spot and the additional cost at the class by check or cash). $35 material fee for your own set of carving tools to take home. For an additional $25, students can purchase a carving knife. All proceeds support Cannon Valley Makers Instructor: Minnesota based carver, Joe Udelhofen, has been honing his carving skills for the past several years. Initially, he started with learning how to hand carve a canoe paddle with only a hand plainer, spoke shave and a carving knife. He quickly learned to carve spoons, coffee scoops and other utensils. Joe’s transition to cottonwood bark was an unexpected but natural one. Cottonwood bark is soft to carve with beautiful grain and texture. Carving faces comes from a place of imagination and curiosity. You never know what is waiting to be revealed in the wood!
