Description
ACTIVITIES: This U.P. DAY OF SERVICE volunteer event - in collaboration with Friends of Trees - includes mulching hundreds of native trees and shrubs that were planted this past winter! We may also remove some weedy introduced plants, if time allows. Note: there will be no tree-planting at this event, and this is physically-demanding work (great for folks looking for a workout!). Lunch is provided afterward at Wilkes City Park (1 block from the planting site) followed by a nature walk through the neighborhood, led by Portland Audubon - please stay for either or both! This event dovetails a day-long celebration organized by Greening Wilkes. Greening Wilkes is a collaborative project to engage the community surrounding Wilkes Park and Wilkes Natural Area to enhance and diversify green spaces throughout the neighborhood. Friends of Trees, Verde, Columbia Slough Watershed Council and Portland Audubon have teamed up together to lead complementary events and outings for the local community to help in this habitat enhancement effort, learn about the amazing natural resources that are present, and help envision how the open spaces may add resilience and health to the community in the future. WHAT TO WEAR & BRING: Tree work can be dirty business! To make sure your experience is fun and comfortable, please wear comfortable closed-toe shoes or boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. It never hurts to bring a water bottle also. PROVIDED FOR YOU: Friends of Trees will provide gloves, tools, and guidance, as well as some light breakfast snacks and coffee/tea/hot chocolate. EVENT SAFETY: Friends of Trees requires that volunteers: -Cancel if you feel unwell, or have been exposed to someone who is Covid-19 positive within 3 days of the event -If you choose to carpool with people outside of your household during the event (relevant for many neighborhood planting events), wear a face mask and roll down the windows to allow for ventilation To see the Friends of Trees safety recommendations and other volunteering questions, please see their Volunteer FAQ webpage.
