We are happy to have local history buff Jeff LaLande join us again to host another Hike & Learn. This time Jeff will give an evening presentation on the Applegate Trail (aka the "Southern Emigrant Road") to and through the Rogue River Valley. The following day, he will lead us on a visit to several segments of the trail that are still visible and give more information and context about the historical significance of this route to our region.
Jeff LaLande moved to southwestern Oregon from Washington, DC in 1969, right after graduating from Georgetown University, and he immediately began learning about our region’s past as well as its geology, flora, and fauna. He earned a master’s degree in archaeology from Oregon State University and then a PhD in American history from the University of Oregon. Jeff is now retired from a thirty-plus year career as an archaeologist with the US Forest Service on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. An adjunct professor of history at SOU for over twenty years, he’s authored several books (including the just-published Jackson County Rebellion: A Populist Uprising in Depression-Era Oregon) and a number of articles published in quarterly journals.
Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization and our mission is to support the protection, restoration and conservation of the monument through service, advocacy and education. Our Hike and Learn programs are designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists, historians, artists, students, and more.
