Shelby County Residents 75 And Older Can Get COVID-19 Vaccine

SHELBY COUNTY, AL — As many counties in the state are moving on to the next phase of COVID-19 vaccinations, Shelby County announced Tuesday that approximately 200 doses of the vaccine are now available to residents age 75 and older. "Healthcare workers, EMS, Fire, and Law Enforcement in Shelby County have had the opportunity to receive their COVID vaccine today," a post on the Shelby County Facebook page said. "Beginning at 12 noon today, ADPH will offer the remaining vaccines (approximately 200) to Shelby County residents age 75 and above at the Shelby County Exhibition Center in Columbiana. Doors will open at 12 noon, first come, first served." Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Public Health on Friday announced Jan. 8 that the department will provide COVID-19 vaccinations for people 75 or older — as well as first responders — statewide by appointment only effective January 18. Jefferson County has not entered the next phase of vaccinations, according to officials. Dr. Mark Wilson of the Jefferson County Health Department said in a news conference Monday that each county is responsible for carrying out the phases of the vaccine roll-out outlined by the Alabama Department of Public Health. "I want to make sure everyone understands we will not be vaccinating people in Phase 1B on the 18th, and we do not know when we will begin that phase," Wilson said Monday. "As we move forward, we are working toward setting up some vaccination sites throughout the county."
