This presentation describes design techniques that aided in accelerating the construction schedule for the Van Wyck Expressway Capacity and Access Improvements to the John F. Kennedy Airport Design Build Project, Contract 1. The purpose of this project is to increase capacity of the Van Wyck Expressway (I-678) between the Kew Gardens Interchange and John F. Kennedy Airport. This presentation will focus on bridge crossings at Liberty Avenue, Hillside Avenue and Jamaica Avenue over the Van Wyck Expressway. The work performed on the structures included retrofit rehabilitations and complete replacement. Various components of the project are discussed including the use of top-down construction on fixed-frame abutments, cut and cover staging methods, and lengthening of existing stringers. Advantages to serviceability of the structures, cost and schedule are discussed in detail. Lessons learned through implementing the designs are also examined.
