Description

The Navajo Nation is a vast area covering over 27,000 square miles (the size of West Virginia). There are currently only 13 grocery stores serving its population of over approx.170,000 people. The lack of access to fresh and healthy foods is due to several factors, including the remote location of many Navajo communities, the high cost of transporting goods to these areas, and a lack of investment in infrastructure. But addressing these obstacles will require a combination of targeted policy interventions, increased investment in infrastructure and education, and greater support for Native American food growers and producers at the community and grassroots level. That's why IndigeHub is investing in building "Food Hub's" across Indian Country. Building food hubs on the Navajo Nation will provide a centralized location where farmers and ranchers can bring their goods to be distributed. The hubs will provide training and education for local farmers and ranchers to improve the quality and quantity of their produce, which can increase demand for locally sourced goods. Additionally, the food hubs will help support the local economy by providing a market for local farmers and ranchers, create new jobs, and increase access to fresh and healthy foods.
