Description
Dan Small was host/producer of OUTDOOR WISCONSIN, a production of Milwaukee PBS, from its premiere in November 1984 until production was curtailed in 2020 due to Covid-19 concerns. He produces and hosts a weekly radio show, Outdoors Radio with Dan Small, which airs on 22 broadcast stations throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota and as a podcast on www.lake-link.com/dsoradio and https://www.iheart.com/podcast/139-dan-small-outdoors-28337616/. He is also contributing editor of WISCONSIN OUTDOOR NEWS, a bi-weekly newspaper that covers outdoor activities, environmental issues and other items of interest to Wisconsin's sportsmen and women. He is past president of the Wisconsin Outdoor Communicators Association and past board member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. He has served on the boards of the Ice Age Park & Trail Foundation, Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers, and the Milwaukee River Revitalization Council. He is a widely published writer/photographer with credits in national and regional magazines. His writing and broadcast efforts have won more than 100 awards in regional and national competition. He was named Conservation Communicator of the Year in 1986 and 2022 by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, and in 1990 received the Gordon MacQuarrie Award for excellence in environmental communication from the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. He was honored twice as Outdoor Writer of the Year by the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, most recently in 2016. He received the Outdoor Educator of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Chapter of NWTF in 2020. He has received Excellence in Craft awards from the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (1999) and the Outdoor Writers Association of America (2019). He was named to OWAA’s prestigious Circle of Chiefs for his distinguished service to conservation in 2020. He holds a PhD from Rice University.
