The Knoxville Compost Project is expanding! Join Dr. Chad Hellwinckel, University of TN professor and owner of City Possum Farm, as he discusses the importance of composting, how to properly turn food scraps into quality compost, & any trouble-shooting. Attendees will receive one free backyard compost tumbler & one countertop food scrap collection bin per household.
The City of Knoxville's Waste and Resources Office was awarded the USDA Composting & Food Waste Reduction Grant. To help us fulfill the requirements of the grant, which supports the expansion of our composting efforts, all participants of the workshop must agree to answer a questionnaire. This will be emailed to you 9 months post-workshop to give you enough time to produce compost. The questionnaire is essential to our reporting of certain metrics to the USDA and in improving future workshops.
You will be asked to report on topics such as the following:
1. Approximate amount of food waste your household contributes each week
2. Any composting challenges faced
3. Approximate amount of compost produced
4. If any compost was applied to soil to grow food
This event is limited to 30 people. You are welcome to bring 1 additional member of your household but please make sure to reserve a spot for them also. Future backyard composting workshops will be held - visit Knoxvilletn.gov/Compost for any updates and other Knoxville Compost Project information. We hope to see you there!
