Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May.  This year it will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 2023.  President Truman led the effort to establish a holiday in order for citizens to unite and to honor our military heroes for their patriotic service in support of the United States of America. It’s a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces. Originally, there were single day celebrations for each branch of the military, this format changed on August 21, 1949, when Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. Stemming from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, the annual celebration now commemorates all branches of the military during one solitary day. The first official Armed Forces Day took place on May 20, 1950 and was themed “Teamed for Defense.” Nine years later, in 1959, the Western New York Armed Forces Committee was organized and held their first Armed Forces Week Celebration. Saturday May 20th we will hold our 60th Military Ball with traditions dating back to the founding of our nation. This year we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee, our 60th year of honoring the men and women of Western New York, who have and who are serving in the six branches of the Armed Forces and the four branches of the New York Guard and Militia. This year, fourteen men and women will be selected as the best of the best. One Awardee is selected from their individual service, reserve component and the four branches of the New York Guard and Militia. They are honored in an awards ceremony at the WNY Armed Forces Military Ball that will be held on May 20th.
