There are two free workshops held in partnership with Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) and taught by CCAD chair of film & video Kingsley Nyarko. Workshop attendees are taught the basics of screenwriting including format, character development and story arc. After the workshops, the teens are encouraged to submit a three to five page script. The scripts are judged by industry professionals, and selected films are ultimately produced by CCAD students during their fall Collaborative Video class; winning screenwriters join the production process as a producer, giving aspiring high school students real-world experience. The workshops will be held in-person for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. “This program continues to be one of Film Columbus’ most important efforts,” said Columbus film commissioner John Daugherty. “Film Columbus knows that providing educational opportunities for young people in the central Ohio area to learn how to write a script and actually have it made into a movie is incredibly important for the future of film in our city and our state.” With state-of-the-art facilities and an ideology that creative collaboration is essential to filmmaking, CCAD is the ideal place to produce and bring the competition scripts to life. “There is wonderful synergy in our partnership with Film Columbus,” said Nyarko. “CCAD's Film & Video program encourages students to explore every aspect of the filmmaking process at CCAD—from pre-production through post-production and distribution. Our partnership with Film Columbus allows high school and college students alike valuable experience to see the film making process from drafting the first scripted sentence to watching the final film on screen." “This partnership with Film Columbus is a beautiful example of how the film ecosystem in a vibrant city works. By making films written by local teens, CCAD students are giving back to future filmmakers while simultaneously learning the important skills of working from existing scripts, understanding Columbus’ film scene from the experts, and submitting their collaborative films to national festivals,” said CCAD director of corporate & community partnerships Nicole Monahan. “It’s been a true joy to see how this project helps all students grow in new ways.” New in 2023, teens will have more flexibility in attending the workshops. Students are required to attend two sessions and submit a script, and each session has two open time slots. For session one, teens can attend either Saturday, March 25 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm or Saturday, April 1 from 1:00-4:00 pm. For session two, teens can select from Saturday, April 8 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm or Saturday, April 15 from 1:00-4:00 pm. Locations for the workshops are conveniently located around the Columbus area.
