Children's mental health is in crisis, as increasing rates of anxiety and depression far outpace the supply of available pediatric therapists and psychiatrists. Dealing with such symptoms can create a barrier which prevents a child from fully accessing their education, and can impact classroom management in more ways than one. In this workshop, we will focus on how the pandemic and quarantine broadly impacted children's mental health, how emotional distress symptoms may present in the classroom, and discuss external resources and clinically-informed ways to help a young person who is struggling. Additionally, we will more explore the recent increase in a specific subset of anxiety-- obsessional thinking and compulsive behaviors-- and how this may impact students in the classroom.GOALS:To help teachers understand the myriad way that anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges may present in the classroomExplore how obsessional thinking and compulsive behaviors present in the classroomExplore how the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened these challengesDiscuss ways to best support children struggling with mental health issues *Dr. Fallon Kane is the founder and owner of Kane Psychology, a group private practice dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of children, adolescents, and families in Long Island.
