El Mouttaki / Morocco Film Synopsis: Astel 24 minutes Director: Ramata-Toulaye SY Country: Senegal It’s October, the end of the rainy season in Fouta, an isolated region in the north of Senegal. Astel (13) accompanies her father every day in the bush. Together, they look after their herd of cows. But one day, in the middle of the desert, the meeting between the young girl and a shepherd disrupts the peaceful daily life between Astel and her father. Official selection SVAFF 2022 WAKARIRU 12 minutes Director: Wambui Kamiru Collymore & Mark Ayabei Country: Kenya Wakariru is an Exhibition about the destruction of language for everyday things and accompanying loss of orally documented knowledge. It looks at memory and the forgotten history of the role of women in the Mau Mau war. Official selection SVAFF 2020 Woman Beings 20 minutes Director: Nyembezi Phiri Country: South Africa 'Woman Beings' is a slice-of-life portrait of different African women trying to live fully amidst pre-defined ways of being. Directed by Nyembezi Phiri, the film features real women and voices that she encounters while traveling in three diverse African cities (Accra, Johannesburg and Lilongwe). Official selection SVAFF 2019 The Other half 15 minutes Director: Asmaa El Mouttaki Country: Morocco A young filmmaker interviews four women for her film project and discovers how society’s expectations, preconceived notions and judgement stop people from compassion. But as the four women began to listen to each other, they slowly realize their shared humanity and their fears become their strength. Official selection SVAFF 2019
