Description

ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI (1593-1654) is the most celebrated woman artist of the Italian baroque. In a career that spanned more than four decades, she lived in Rome, Florence, as well as Naples, where she spent the last two decades of her life. Though widely admired during her lifetime, she fell into near oblivion in later eras as artistic tastes shifted from dramatic naturalism towards a more classicizing manner. Having been rediscovered some forty years ago, she is now enjoying a major revival. In this special program, art historian Aneta Georgievska-Shine looks more closely at her artistic and personal aspirations and accomplishments. Pre-registration is required for in-person attendance. Guests who are unable to attend in person may stream this event live on the Chazen Museum of Art Facebook page. This lecture is inspired by Forward Theater's World Premiere of Artemisia, a new play by Lauren Gunderson. About Aneta Georgievska-Shine: ANETA GEORGIEVSKA-SHINE teaches in the Department of Art History, University of Maryland, College Park. Her research interests include the reception of classical art and literature in the early modern period, inter-pictorial, and inter-cultural exchanges. Her scholarly books have addressed the work of artist like Rubens and Velazquez. Her most recent one, Vermeer and the Art of Love, was included in the Christie’s list of “best art books to look forward to in 2022.” Her interests in other art historical periods are exemplified by her curatorial work and publications on modern and contemporary art. Beyond the academic environment, she is a frequent lecturer for museums and other art institutions, including the Smithsonian.
