Description
The Department of Sociology at Boston University is hosting presentations on the topic of race in global perspective. This will be part of a day-long junior scholar symposium showcasing the work of emerging scholars (recent graduates, ABD, postdoctoral fellows or visiting assistant professors). Boston University’s Emerging Scholars Program is intended for people from racial or ethnic groups historically excluded from the academy, including African Americans, Alaska Natives, Arab Americans, Southeast Asians and Asian Americans, Latinx, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders. Global perspectives in sociological study encompass a wide range of topics including migration, health and well-being, violence, climate change/environment and the geopolitical and economic consequences of colonialism. Of special interest is work that takes an intersectional approach to studying race and racism and employs a transnational or translocal framework. The symposium will bring together emerging scholars and senior scholar discussants to explore the complex ways that race and ethnicity is experienced, understood, and theorized cross-nationally, including how race and ethnicity shapes life chances worldwide.
