What more can I say that has not already been said about Steve Riley? I sometimes refer him to my friends as the Morrissey of Cajun Music - A lot of traditional Cajun songs sound happy when in fact they tell stories of grief, pain and loss. He's been a mainstream musician and an ambassador of Cajun music for over 35 years. Now he is doing his part in preserving our culture and teaching his children the art of playing multiple instruments such as the Accordion, Fiddle, Guitar, triangle and whatever else they can get their hands on. And perhaps the weight and importance of Cajun music in our region can best be summed up by Steve Riley in a quote he gave in an interview with Savannah Connect in 2008 - “Well, down here in Louisiana, Cajun music is everywhere: weddings, festivals, funerals, dance halls on the weekends — it’s just a huge part of everyone’s life,” replied Riley. “It’s what helps people get through the hard times. There’s such a rich musical heritage in this particular part of the world. It’s really unlike any other place I’ve ever been." Saturday STEVE RILEY AND THE RILEY FAMILY BAND WITH SPECIAL GUEST DAVID GREELY will play a few songs, talk about their songs, share their relationships with them and share stories of their favorite childhood food memories which Chefs C.J Pothier and Greg Walls will recreate (price includes food). Doors open @ 6:00 PM. Show starts @ 6:45 PM( ish) Riley Family Band bio: Grammy award winning Cajun musician Steve Riley has been been playing Cajun music since age 7. As a teenager he honed his craft as a student of Dewey Balfa, touring and playing throughout south Louisiana with Dewey until his death in 1992. For the past 35 years, Steve & his renowned, respected group, the Mamou Playboys, have traveled the US & the world as ambassadors of Cajun music and culture. Also a music teacher of 30 years, Steve has passed his love of music to his 2 sons, Burke Riley 13 & Dolsy Riley 10. They both play multiple instruments like their father and have already logged several hours playing & singing onstage with him.
