The Morning Session
Jump Seat Leadership Seminar
Speaker: Lt. Josh Chase – Norfolk Fire Rescue
Leaders wanted; Bugle not Required: We cannot continue
to let the fire service suffer due to lack of leadership. This
seminar focuses on training and educating personnel in
the fire service to lead at the informal level. We cover
basic principles of leadership and focus primarily on
individuals who do not hold a leadership position, rather
we equip and prepare the men and women in the fire
service to lead in whatever position they hold. From the
apparatus bay floor to the office door, this seminar is
changing the fire service through strengthening informal
leadership. This seminar is meant to strengthen,
encourage, and empower firefighters to lead without
rank. Leaders in the fire service are wanted, and a bugle is
not required! Informal leaders are the backbone of the fire
service.
The Afternoon Session
Trial by Fire Seminar
Speaker: Capt. Jarrod Sergi – Norfolk Fire Rescue
Fire Service Mortar: The critical role of the company
officer: This class provides the tools and knowledge to
lead from the front as a company officer, all while building
an effective group of performers. It targets newly
promoted company officers as well as those who may
assume the role in the near future but will ultimately
benefit anyone who has the desire to make change and
drive ownership into the company level. Company officers
truly are the mortar in any fire department. They have the
ability to keep their department running strong and
efficient with their example, attitude, and passion. This
class emphasizes the importance of unit cohesion and
how it can have a lasting impact.
