Description

The Daniel Island Community Speaker’s Series will continue on Wednesday evening, April 26, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the ballroom at the Daniel Island Club. Our speaker will be Mike Seekings who is Charleston City Councilmember for District 8. Mike spoke to our Rotary Club in April of last year and many members asked if we could bring him back to address the entire Daniel Island Community. If you have not heard Mike speak, this is a perfect opportunity to hear from one of our most influential council members. Mike is the Charleston City Councilmember for District 8 which encompasses all of the downtown peninsula from the Battery to Calhoun and West of King Street. That means that his district suffers the most from Charleston’s flooding problem which explains his intense interest in that particular problem. After redistricting District 8 will include the Union Pier area of downtown which is being transformed from a passenger ship terminal, a very large parking lot, and vacant warehouses into a Charleston neighborhood that will extend public access to the waterfront. This means that Mike has a vested interest in the development plan for the property proposed by the Lowe Real Estate firm. Also after redistricting District 8 will include part of Daniel Island south of the Wando River Bridge so he will become the city council representative for some DI residents. Mike was first elected to City Council in November 2013. He is the Chairman of CARTA, Chair of the Traffic and Transportation Committee, and is on the Board of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Gibbes Museum, and the Cooper River Bridge Run. He is widely recognized as the hardest working, most informed member on the council. As a result, the Charleston City Paper has voted him the best City Council member for 11 straight years. Mike also runs his own law firm, Leath, Bouch & Seekings, which represents owners in complex construction defect litigation. He and his wife Michele live on the peninsula and are active supporters of many local artists who he says live within a half mile of his house. This event will be held on Wednesday evening, April 26, at the Daniel Island Club. There will be a cash bar and passed hors oeuvres between 6:30 and 7:00 pm. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 pm and will conclude around 8:00 pm.
