With headquarters in Sparta, NC, The Upper New Review is a brand new organization, including an environmental literary arts magazine, launched in 2023, thanks in part to a generous Artist Support Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. The plan is for the Upper New Review to collect enough curated content submissions to launch the full website in June 2023, and to publish the first quarterly print magazine issue in December 2023. Founder and publisher (and Alleghany resident) Benjamin Erlandson, Ph.D. will be on hand at Laconia Ale Works to speak about the curation focus of the website and quarterly magazine. We’ll discuss our unique place-based focus (and the “what and where” of the Upper New River Basin) as well as the submission guidelines and how to contribute various types of your creative work (not just prose, poetry, and visual art!). You can find out about opportunities to volunteer (like joining our nationwide team of reviewers!), and all the other sorts of featured content (and interactive experiences) we’ll be creating in-house and curating for the website and magazine. You can find out about some educational events we are planning, and talk with us about our plans to be a nonprofit organization. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you have! We hope for a lively discussion. Weather permitting, we will set up on the patio of Laconia Ale Works to enjoy the last hours of sunlight for the day. If the weather is less than ideal, we’ll set up inside. The best fresh local beer around will be on tap in Laconia. We’d love to know which one is your favorite! It’s also Thursday, and that means it’s pizza night at Becca’s. We love the fact that you can get takeout pizza and bring it to enjoy at Laconia - such a cool collaboration!
