Description

Sky High Farm and Upstate Films are partnering to produce Cultivation!, a series of food and film-centered events that will take place in the Hudson Valley. Both organizations are based in upstate New York, an area that’s often mistakenly identified as a homogenous farm and food landscape. In reality, this region is (and always has been) home to a rich variety of agricultural and cooking practices that reflect the diversity of people behind them. Cultivation! is an event curated to amplify and highlight some of the incredible food, farms, and people that are commonly overlooked or erased in conversations about what foods are grown and eaten in the Hudson Valley. Vendors featured in the concession bazaar include: Reconnect Foods, Mamita's Kitchen, Samosa Shack, and more! Live music performance by Callie Mackenzie The diverse group of Mid-Hudson Valley farms being highlighted features: Against the Grain (dir. Angel Gates Fonseca, 17 min.) A HUDSY Original about a family of farmers from Gambia that established a rice farm (Ever-Growing Family Farm) using centuries-old, West African techniques of the Jola people in the unexpectedly fertile soils of Ulster Park, NY. Farm to Community: The Abundance Farms Story (dir. Allison McIntyre, 13 min.) Founded by Innocence Powell, Abundance Farm is a grassroots farming effort where Inno grows and distributes free food to BIPOC members of the Kingston community and beyond. Rock Steady Farm (dir. Walter Hergt, 22 min.) Rock Steady is a LGBTQIA+ owned and operated cooperative farm in Millerton, New York, rooted in social justice and sustainability. Linke Fligl: And Though We May Not Finish This (dir. Sol Weiss/Ollie Schwartz/Margot Seigle/Chana Rusanov, 11 min.) Linke Fligl was a late, great queer Jewish farm/cultural organizing project neighboring Rock Steady which deepened Jewish communal commitment to the land. Stay for a post-screening conversation with some of the featured farmers, including Inno Powell (Abundance Farms), Nyasa Hoyte (Ever-Growing Family Farm), Ollie Schwartz (Linke Fligl), and a member from Rock Steady Farm. This event is free and open to all. Donations are suggested and greatly appreciated.
