Description

Trying to manage invasive species on your property? Wondering where you should even begin? Interested in learning the most effective techniques for controlling invasive plants or which species are more commonly problematic in our region? VINS has the workshop for you. Join Michael Bald of Got Weeds? for an introduction to terrestrial invasive plants and effective manual control methods. This workshop will feature opportunities to get your hands dirty as you put your new skills to the test and help VINS target invasive species at the Nature Center. The workshop will begin with a roundup of invasive plants and a discussion on the biodiversity impacts of exotic plants and safe practices for removal. Participants will then join VINS staff and Mike in an outdoor scavenger hunt to find and identify these non-native species where they thrive. Mike will clarify the thought process in moving through a forested setting or a woodline, highlighting which tools to use, how to achieve the highest possible efficiencies and discuss what happens after a disturbance. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the transition underway on our landscapes. Participants should dress for walking in the woods and bring water, snacks, clean boots and some form of eye protection. Gloves are also recommended, with a limited supply on hand if needed. This event is free and open to all ages. Support VINS and consider a donation of $10. Interested in getting involved ?
