About our March 20, 2023 speaker: Alex Arevalos, Ph.D., is a bioengineer and serial medtech entrepreneur with a passion for developing medtech companies that couple improving patient care along with improving healthcare economics. Alex has extensive experience in start-up company development as a founder, board member, and executive roles. Companies he has founded have raised over $130 million in capital commercializing several next generation first in class medical device products from concept to market. On the side of his Ph.D., he founded his first venture funded medical device company named Saranas, Inc. commercializing a smart vascular access cardiac sheath capable of detecting internal bleeding complications in real time. The Saranas technology won the 2020 ACC Innovation of the Year Award and is currently being marketed throughout the US. After Saranas, Alex joined the Texas Medical Center Biodesign Innovation Fellowship which he spun out his second company, Alleviant Medical, commercializing a novel transcatheter treatment for congestive heart failure. Alleviant Medical received the Breakthrough Device Designation in 2020 from the joint Medicare/FDA program and is currently undergoing multi-center randomized clinical studies for the technology. Currently, Alex serves as the President, CEO, and Cofounder of Starling Medical where they are developing the world's first at-home urine diagnostic patient monitoring platform that can seamlessly integrate into anybody’s daily bathroom routine. Through passive urine screening, Starling proactively connects patients to care to help prevent hospitalizations from numerous chronic conditions like recurrent UTIs, diabetes, kidney disease, and dozens more. Starling was selected for the world's most prestigious accelerator Y-combinator, been featured in TechCrunch three times, named a 2023 CB Insights Top 150 Digital Health company out of 13,000 potential digital health companies, won the people's choice award at the ATA 2023 Innovation Pitch Competition, won 1st place at the Texas A&M New Ventures Competition and Rice Napier Launch Challenge, and most recently Alex was selected as one of the top 35 Digital Health Leaders alongside some of the largest names in the industry. Alex earned his Ph.D. in the Integrated Matrix Mechanics Laboratory at Rice University in Dr. Grande-Allen’s lab focused on exploring the role of new blood vessel signaling on heart valve disease using tissue engineering approaches. He earned his BS in Bioengineering from Rice University with a focus in bioinstrumentation, and he has completed research fellowships at Baylor College of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic.
