20 April, 2023

Description

Over the years, Northwest Iowa has been a destination for immigrants and refugees. From the Yankton Lakota , to Dutch settlers, to immigrants and refugees from Central America, the Ukraine, and Afghanistan—Northwest Iowa has a history of people coming from different parts of the world. With this diversity comes the opportunity to encounter new forms of culture, but this also brings challenges. Our human tendency is to stay connected to people who are like us, who are part of our culture and language, which means it can be difficult to build community with each other. The purpose of this event is to discuss new ways to build bridges and establish friendships with people across cultural differences. You are invited to come hear Emilia Marroquín talk about her immigration story as she moved from El Salvador to California to Storm Lake, IA. Emilia will also discuss practical ways communities in Northwest Iowa can be places of welcome for all people. We will also hear a panel discussion from leaders in Sioux Center about ways we can break down barriers and build friendships across cultural differences. What: Conversation about Immigration, Refugees, and Northwest Iowa When: April 20. 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm Where: Maria Magdalena Reformed Church 305 N. Main Sioux Center, Iowa Who: Anyone who wants to help make Northwest Iowa a welcoming place for immigrants and refugees.
