The Wicomico County Health Department in partnership with the Salisbury University Center for Healthy Communities proudly presents the 2023 Minority Youth Outreach Project. This year's event will bring keynote speaker Dr. LaMarr D. Shields , Social Entrepreneur, Inspirational Speaker, Educator & Cambio Group Co-Founder/ Senior Director of Education and Innovation. Formerly of Johns Hopkins School of Education, Shields is a scholar and practitioner in the field of racial, ethics and academic identity among Black and Latino male youth, along with fostering inter-connectivity and deep engagement among educators, policy makers, parents and other change agents. He earned the 2015 Star Innovator Award from the Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Equity. Facing Our Future Together Our intensive one-day workshop Facing Our Future Together: Improving Cultural Competence to Reduce Health Disparities, offered by the Cambio Group and presented by LaMarr D. Shields provides an in-depth overview of the role organizations play in advancing health equity across their organizations and in the communities they serve. Cambio Group Proposal for Wicomico County Health Department, September 2022 The workshop will cover foundational concepts central to advancing health equity, including an overview of the difference between equity and equality in a health care setting, the root causes of health inequities (both historical and contemporary), and the impact of implicit bias and racism on current health outcomes. Participants will learn strategies for how hospitals/ schools/programs can work to transform their organizations into anchor institutions by adopting an anchor mission and aligning institutional resources.
