In 2021, the theater world lost an absolute legend when composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim passed away at the age of 91. Mr. Sondheim, who began his career in the 1950’s and continued right up until his death, wrote 19 musicals, many of which are considered classics. Those he wrote music and/or lyrics for include, Gypsy, West Side Story, Company, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and many more. Over the course of his career, Mr. Sondheim was also honored with many major awards, including 8 Tony Awards for his work in the theater, an Academy Award for his song “Sooner or Later” from the movie “Dick Tracy, multiple Grammy Awards for his shows cast recordings and multiple Laurence Olivier awards, which are the British equivalent of the Tony’s.
