It was the worst of times.” That description in Dickens’ Tale of Two Cities also depicts US health care in 2023. Advances in neuroscience imaging and genomics are offering new diagnostic tools for poorly understood mental illnesses. Hallucinogens such as Psilocybin offer entirely new treatment pathways for difficult-to-treat Depressive Disorders and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. At the same time, the COVID-19 Pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the health care system and the millions of clinicians providing care to a rapidly aging population. Emergency rooms are flooded with patients with mental illness, addiction, and behavioral problems; the health care workforce is exhausted; remote work is everyday practice; and aging baby boomers are driving an unprecedented increase in demand for care—all leading to rapidly changing health care needs. Join mental health expert, Dr. Gerard Clancy to learn about today’s pressing health needs in Iowa and understand developing trends that are dramatically changing health care as we know it. Dr. Clancy will then move on to the incredible potential at hand in the area of neuroscience. Discover what progress and partnerships are being made to address mental health and other health needs in Iowa. Part I. The Future of Post-pandemic Health Care in the Roaring 2020s. Part II. Lighting Up Our Brains; better Understanding of Mental Illness through Advanced Brain Imaging, Hallucinogens, Ketamine and Ecstasy.
